This study aims to empirically validate a hypothetical research model where a wrongdoer can restore self by a means of self-forgiveness. The participants were 425 college and graduate school students (246 females) attending K university in Seoul, South Korea. A series of statistical analyses (i.e. ANOVA and structural equation modeling) were conducted using the data of 393 respondents, except for cases where the transgression was not serious at all or had unfaithful responses. The results showed that the acceptance of responsibility, guilt, and conciliatory behavior affect genuine self-forgiveness and contribute positively to self-acceptance and moral self (moral identity) through genuine self-forgiveness, even after controlling for narcissistic personality and transgression severity. Based on the results, we concluded that self-forgiveness for coping with wrongdoing and mistakes in a positive and healthy way contributes to the perpetrator s restorations of self. Furthermore, educational implications were discussed and future research was suggested.
