This aim of this study is to investigate the effects of quality of home environment and parental mathematical interaction on the cognitive ability of 3-year-olds and verify whether parental mathematical interaction mediated the relationships between the quality of home environment and the cognitive ability. We tested the cognitive ability of 110 children using the Korean version of KABC-II tool standardized by Kaufman & Kaufman (2014), and surveyed their mothers inquiring the quality of home environment (Kim, 2012) and the parental mathematical interaction (Kim, 2015). The data were analyzed by means of multiple regression analyses. The parental mathematical interaction and the quality of the home environment anticipated the cognitive ability of the 3-year-olds significantly, and the parental mathematical interaction had a dominant effect on the cognitive ability of children in comparison to the quality of the home environment. Furthermore, the parental mathematical interaction partially mediated the relationship between the quality and the ability. This suggested that the quality of the home environment predicted the cognitive ability directly, affected the parental mathematical interaction simultaneously, and predicted the cognitive ability indirectly. This research is meaningful in that we pursued to anticipate the cognitive ability considering the quality of the home environment and the parental mathematical interaction as simultaneous factors and we determined the relationships between the factors predicting the cognitive ability by illuminating the interrelations of the factors.
