The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the temperament of preschoolers and the maternal behavior and maternal stress of their mothers on the phenomenon of smartphone overuse. The subjects of this study are 251 mothers and their children aged between 3 and 5. Descriptive statistics, Pearson product-moment correlation analyses and stepwise multiple regression analyses were utilized. The findings of the study were as follows: First, in relation to the average scores of the preschoolers on overuse, excessive pursuit was most common, followed by abnormal development and obsessive use. Second, the temperament of the preschoolers was significantly correlated with their own smartphone overuse, and the maternal stress of the mothers was positively correlated with their smartphone overuse. Mother’s positive interaction was negatively correlated with smartphone overuse in young children. Third, the variable that had the greatest influence on the smartphone overflow of the preschoolers was stress about dysfunctional parent-child interaction, with this followed by maternal responsiveness and the emotionality level of young children. The findings of the study illustrate that positive communication with parents has the greatest impact on the smartphone overuse of young children.
