The Mediating Effects of Character on the Relationship between the Early Childhood Home Environment and Self-Regulation

The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effects of character on the relationship between the early childhood home environment and self-regulation. Data were collected from mothers and teachers of children aged from three to five in kindergartens and public child-care centers in Daejeon, Korea. The data were then analyzed using multiple regression and structural equation modeling. According to the results, there was a correlation among early childhood home environment, character, and self-regulation. The early childhood home environment influenced self-regulation through the character of young children. Also the early childhood home environment influenced self-regulation. The Sobel formula also indicated that this relationship was mediated by character. Thus, character had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between the early childhood environment and self-regulation. This study demonstrated that young children’s characters, along with their home environments, suggested to play an important role in developing and improving competence in relation to early childhood self-regulation.
